WHO WE ARE

We envision our organisation as:

  • A roof for growth
We create structures and programmes supporting professional artistic development, experimentation, research and presentation of works that focus on body and movement as a means of provoking curiosity, dialogue and expression.

We aim to create appropriate working conditions for the well-being of the Cypriot artistic community.
  • A roof for exchange and extroversion
We connect the Cypriot artistic community with the international scene through projects and collaborations. We create a safe environment for the direct communication of artists with the local community through the lens of critical thinking.

We are in constant search of innovative ways to make contemporary artistic creation visible and accessible.
  • A roof for innovation and interdisciplinarity
We bring together artists and artistic mediums in order to exchange and activate new narratives, practices and methodologies around the body and the socio-political contexts that surround it. We believe in the constant renegotiation of the creative process and resist any stereotypical perspectives that frame contemporary creation.

We aim to constantly re-examine the role of art in society and the role of our organisation as a whole.

Our Values

At the core of our efforts, we hold the following SIFT* values: Sustainability, Inclusivity, Fairness and Transparency. SIFT to us means looking at something thoroughly to isolate what is most important or valuable. Metaphorically it means carefully selecting, refining and exploring movements, routines or even ideas, which is in keeping with the nature of dance.

Through these SIFT values, we seek to create a dynamic environment that inspires and supports artistic expression and social change.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a core value for our organization in terms of exploring choreographic structures and practices that promote long-term well-being (i.e. people, environment, and so on).

Inclusivity

Inclusivity is fundamental to our approach as we seek to create a space where every person, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity or social background, can express themselves and actively participate.

Fairness

Fairness is a core principle in our practices, ensuring that all our partners, from artists to staff, are treated with respect and equal treatment.

Transparency

We operate with clarity and honesty in all our interactions regarding selection criteria. We are always open to feedback and provide responses that substantiate our positions, keeping the care and progress of artists and the community as a whole at the heart of our communication.

History

Dance House Lemesos (aka Stegi) was established in 2007 by dance artists based
in Limassol as a structure that would support local artistic research and practice.

The starting point of the development of Dance House Lemesos was an initiative of Lia Haraki in 2005, to invite the most active contemporary dance groups of Limassol to share a space for their rehearsals and to host their artistic research. In 2007 driven by a common vision, the dance collectives pelma.lia haraki (Lia Haraki), Chorotheatro Omada Pente (Chloe Melidou, Roula Kleovoulou), En drasi (Evi Demetriou, Emily Papaloizou), Interact Group (Natasa Georgiou) and Solipsism (Anna Charalambous) created Dance House Lemesos as an open, artist-run structure that would allow the development of the art of dance and support the artistic potential in the island. These founding members, who formed the first board of directors of the organisation, worked hard, offering their time and experience setting the fundamental principles for the establishment of the organisation. Today, after 17 years of uninterrupted operation, the D.H.L is still run by artists and remains a reference point for the Cypriot choreographic community.

As the first cultural organisation on the island dedicated to the development of professional contemporary dance, it was recognized and funded by the Cultural Services of the former Ministry of Education and Culture in the field of contemporary dance. Nowadays the organisation is funded by the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture and is supported by the Municipality of Limassol.
