Melina Sofocleous
Melina Sofocleous, born in Cyprus, is a freelance dance artist and choreographer, graduate of Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance (2017), Melina has collaborated with choreographers and companies across Europe, including La Biennale di Venezia (Marie Chouinard, Daina Ashbee, Adriano Bolognino, Sofia Nappi), Lia Haraki (CY), Phoenix Dance Theatre (UK), Aerites Dance Company (GR), Panos Malactos (CY) and Toussaint To Move Company (UK). Their choreographic works have been showcased at the Cyprus Choreographic Platform, Open House Festival, and Rialto Theatre. In 2024, Melina’s solo Don’t You Just Love Melting? premiered at the 24th Cyprus Choreographic Platform, winning the Emerging Choreographer Award. Their work focuses on interdisciplinary collaborations, exploring Nature centred and Urban landscapes, political and social landscapes, and immersive performance experiences. Project: Don't You Just Love Melting? Dialogue partner: Eleana Alexandrou In Don't You Just Love Melting?, large polycarbonate sheets and melting materials, such as blocks of ice and chains become both subject and medium, deforming and transforming under stage lighting as a reflection of synthetic structures succumbing to natural forces. The work critiques the unsustainable nature of contemporary urban planning, exposing the tension between artificial solutions and nature’s quiet resilience. What happens when the structures we build reflect not only perceived progress but also begin to negatively impact our lives? Don't You Just Love Melting? confronts the fragility of urban development and the tension between synthetic and natural forces. During the residency, I aim to strengthen and clarify the work’s intention by refining its dramaturgy. I will also explore how the performance can adapt to different spaces while maintaining its essence.
