Moving The New: Choreographic Lab
Dance House Lemesos announces the first three-day (26,27,28 of February) intensive laboratory “Moving The New: Choreographic Lab”, in collaboration with the mentors Matteo Fargion, Eleana Alexandrou, and Rodia Vomvolou.
The laboratory proposes a research platform in which participants will have the opportunity to exchange practices with each other and with the mentors while approaching new methodologies. The workshop can be used as a stimulus for the beginning of a new creation or to expand the existing artistic practices and references of the participant artists.
The laboratory aims at giving to the participants a multifaceted exposure to tools of contemporary choreographic creation: composition, dramaturgy, and text through three sub-workshops – Unpacking Dramaturgy, Making performances, Music & Dance – which reinforce and complement each other.
In detail, the workshops that make up the entire intensive program:
Unpacking Dance Dramaturgy / Rodia Vomvolou
What does “dramaturgy” could mean and what forms does it take in the context of contemporary choreographic practice? What place does dramaturgy have in our work as dancers/choreographers/makers? How can we think and act dramaturgically in a creative process? Touching upon contemporary approaches and notions of dramaturgy and the role of the dramaturg, the workshop aims to offer and develop tools and methodologies that cut across the fields of dramaturgy, choreography, and performing arts. Through written, oral and practical tasks, both individually and in groups, participants will have the opportunity to explore dramaturgy both as a theoretical and practical field, to have space to ponder over thoughts and ideas around its relationship with choreography, and to acquire practical tools and exercises that activate a dramaturgical dialogue.
Music & Dance / Matteo Fargion
Matteo will lead a three-day composition workshop, suitable for anyone interested in making things, which focuses on what happens when ideas and techniques, which come primarily from music, are translated into other media.
The three-day x three-hour sessions will consist of short task-based exercises, often using extreme reduction of possibilities to stimulate the imagination.
Questions about how to find material, how to keep something going, what makes a strong or a weak change and other compositional ‘problemsʼ will be discussed. Participants will create scores incorporating sound, movement, and text to explore the role of structure as a liberating rather than a restricting organisational element.
Making Performances / Eleana Alexandrou
Performance making is a process open to anything and nothing, between questions, statements, dreams, and pondering. It’s also about the negotiation of time and intensity. With this workshop, I will offer processes of unpacking our concepts, making decisions, performing, and reflecting. We will deal with starting tools, ideas unlocking through practical exercises, we will compose songs, solo performances, and see how different manifestations of physicality and choreography communicate.
